so searching around E-bay i ran into a 1981 maxim 550 close enough for my to pick up. I won the auction at $68.00 cant beat that.

Clean title, and decent shape bike.
Some things had been parted off it and it looks to have been laid down once.

    It’s missing:
    carb boots air box side
start stop switch and throttle handle
    throttle cable is broken
all 4 turn signals, but in Virginia you don’t need them
    tank cap
    ignition
    ignition plastic cover
    keys
left side plastic cover below seat
    tank emblems
door for the under/behind seat tool box
exhaust pips/tips but the heads are still on the bike
    fuse box
front forks need oil and may need to seals
    center stand
    mirrors

    In bad shape:
    rear springs are near shot
breaks are out, thinking there is a leak in the line
carbs are gummed up bad, but i'm cleaning them now
    some rust on the frame
some rust and scaling in the tank
front head light holder looks questionable
rear tire is bald but holding air, front tire is flat and may hold air

    Perks:
Hotwired with a starter switch mounted on the right side cover (it works)
    bike turns over
fresh powder coat on tank and rear fender
Seat and back rest in good shape

I was going to use it as a parts bike for my 1982 maxim 550, but after hearing it turn over I think I am going to try and restore it.

    What do you all think?

Sounds like a good parts bike to me. You'll sink a few hundred dollars getting all the missing stuff (unless your particularly resourceful and a good barter/trade guru). Best of luck which ever road you choose, your bound to have fun either way.

Wow, just looked at your location, I'm guessing you had to go north to get the bike? Usually anything south of Richmond goes for big bucks, and for some reason stuff north of Richmond is much cheaper. Good find!! I always figure with a deal like that, you could always part it out and MAKE money on it, so it can't be a bad deal. At least that's how I rationalize buying all these bikes anyway...

hahaha exactly... but once i get my hands on a bike, i just can't bare to part with it... The bike was east of here, in Hampton just befor going threw the bay tunnle... which worked out so so well since i was already going threw there to see familly at VB it just so worked out that i could pick it up the day i was heading to the beach... the guy was so nice, he even loaded it on the truck for me which would hav been a task on my own heh.
