So I'm going to Prime my bike in the next couple days. Just get a coat down and get rid of the purple. I jsut need to take care of all the spots on her, so I'm going to go with a Flat Black Primer.
I picked up some stuff, and am having second thoughts about it. Its called,
Krylon Rust Tough Enamel, Flat Black.
Good or bad Choice?? I'm undecided..
I'm going to paint the Mirrors, the Master Cylinder, and the Tank and Fenders with it.
Is any of these things I want to paint going to be bad for it as a Primer?? I might just RattleCan the entire thing for now until I can afford a Real Paint Job.
I know the plastic side covers need special Primer, so I'm going to hold off on that. Until I pick some up
Todays project is Mirrors and Master Cylinder, which are going to stay black, so I think they'll be ok. But Bad idea for the Tank and Fenders??
Not gonna start till you guys give some thoughts

I have flat primer green (like OD green) and love the look it gives the bike, but pain to clean...

the primer would depend on the top coat
if your using cans, think about doing a few parts at a time
you'll develop a system and when you get to the tank you'll be runnin in greased groves

I used engine enamel on my parts like MC/Calipers/etc and it looks pretty good and is holding up well

Primer is just that: primer. It is not designed to function as a top coat and will not be effective as such.

So this Krylon Rust Tough Enamel would work, jsut beacuse it sits underneath the actual color coats. I'll stick to my first paint job as Rattle Can and it should be ok, right? Stick with Krylon Paint for the Color and Clear Coat.
Cool. Well, I'll go hit my Mirrors and MC and post pics.
    Thanks guys.

Yes, I know and don't plan on keeping it forever, just till I finish with the mechanical stuff...

    Still a really cool color...

Looks reaaaal good guys. I'll take a pics in a bit. I think I am actually gonna use it on the Gas Tank and Fenders. It wasnt too too expensive, and the color is great. Very smooth finish.
Hopefully Krylon has a Dark Blue and a Clear coat.
Or maybe when I'm ready I'll just sane the whole thing again and put down new primer and color and clear.
Anyway, post pics soon. Didnt think to get before pics... go figure

OH! Question about the MC. When I remove it isnt Brake Fluid gonna pour out?? How should I go about removing it, painting it, and then reassembling it?

Street Legal Kid, careful with the master cylinder. You don't want to fill the phillips head screws with primer or paint. Make taking it back apart a beeotch!!!

Masking tape and an exacto knife would be a suggestion.

    Just mho.

Yeah I thought about that already! Thanks for the warning though! Much appreciated!
Do I need to drain that MC first before I remove it?? Or Should I remove just the handlebar clips and like put a bag around it and go to town?

Leave it (connections) intact and paint it if you can (Open one of the bottom flaps of a cardboard box and put it through the bottom, then tape the bottom back, better than a bag as it is rigid and you won't be fighting it). If not Drain. Paint. REplace. Refill. Bleed. Bleed. Bleed.

you're going to want a proper paint job that won't melt the first time it touches gass or brake fluid. do a test and don't leave primer uncovered for long it just smoothes a surface a little and makes paint stick. moisture goes through it. dirt sticks to it.

So you're suggesting i should go ahead and Clear Coat the parts I painted so no dirt and stuff sticks to it Zoooot? I dont plan on leaving it flat black, but its definatly gonna be that color for longer than a few weeks.

So I made the color I wanted. The dark dark blue. And I painted the side panels, and the front fender with it.
    And Hated it
Sucks! Didnt like it at all. So I went with the Krylon Rust Tough Semi-Flat Black and when It dried i felt my little kid heart skip a beat.
    Flat Black is Hot.
I'm Clear Coating it tomorrow morning and adding a bit of stencil work to the side panels.
Definatly post pics when I'm done

High Gloss Clear Coat is not the way to go to keep that Flat Black apparently. I jsut picked up a can and never bothered to look to see if it was High Gloss or Flat/Satin.. Oh well.. Back to sanding.
Anyone know where I can get Satin Clear Coat at? Napa didnt have it

Krylon and Kilz both make it.

Check people who carry that: Home depot, Lowes, etc.
