So, here's what I think I know from my search efforts.

For my 80 650 Maxim, these are my sure to fit options for replacing the fuel tank:

-any other 650 maxim tank (obviously)
-a tank from a 750 maxim is a direct fit, with larger capacity
-any xj SECA tank, but it won't fit the maxim seat correctly

So here are some I'm not sure about:

    -Virago tanks?
    -xj 550 tanks?
-any other Yamaha tanks (with minor modification?)

I've got a tank that's been brazed, welded, and otherwise violated by previous owners, and I'm not sure I want to deal with the latest seam leak.

The 550 tank is not a direct bolt on.
Any tank from any bike can be modified to fit, if it clears the frame.
Your best bet is a 750 Maxim tank, or clean up and re-braze your tank.
Take it to a radiator shop and they'll boil it out, then you braze it, then you paint it. Before messing with your tank, blow car exhaust in it for 5 minutes. You should be able to fix a small leak.

I agree; the 550s are going to be too short to match your mounting points.

The 750 Max tank is probably your best bet if you want more capacity.

how much taller, wider are the 750 tanks compared to the 650s? Anyone have a side by side comparison shot available? I'd love the capacity, but don't really want additional clunkiness.

I know the virago tank is totally different as my best friend has one, I would also like to see the difference between the two if anyone can? any chance we have a 650 and 750 owner close together?

i just put on a 750 tank on my 650 and fits perfect the tank is wider but i think adds a better look, the bike isnt so skinny looking, sorry i cant post any pictures my camara broke a couple weeks ago, but i love the extra capacity ,im on my first tank and im at 98 miles and looks like i still have a quarter tank and on my stock one i never went over a hundred miles without fueling.

I can't provide pics, but I can confirm that it fits and does look completely at home, plus it provides 2 extra gallons of range. As the 750 also has a gas sensor, you can add a gas gauge too.
