On an 81 xj650, the only spacers (~3" long x 1" OD metal cylinder) are in between the bearings correct?

Reason i ask is I took my wheels off to have the tires done and change the brake pads, and now i can't remember whether the spacer i have is from my XJ or my CB parts bike.

Soooo i looked long and hard at the diagrams in the haynes manual. From what i can see, the only spacer that looks like the one i have fits in between the bearings on either side of the front or back wheel, in the center of the wheel. correcto? I don't really see a good spot for it to go, except into the hole in the center of the drive splines thru which passes the spindle. seems like it would be a b%*ch toput the wheel back on if this were the case, but when has any of this been easy?

    Re: Rear/front wheel spacers

Moonfired you are correct. The spacer you describe goes int splined drive side of the rear wheel. I know because during by teardown I put the rear wheel back on & it was draging against the Alum. shield. I bet I took that thing off 5 times before I found that spacer on my bench & put it in. As I recall it really was that hard to put wheel on with it there. It just looks like it. Or I was lucky.
