82 1100 kickstarter???

Hey guys,
Just got to thinkin tonight, I see there is a spot for a kick starter on the side of the 1100 engine case. Anyone ever hear of someone actually installing a kick starter on their 1100? Know where I can get a kit?
Any info on this would be appreciated, thanks guys!

There is no "kit" to put a kick starter on the xj1100. You have to get an early xs11 engine or find someone parting one and grab all of the kick starter guts to put in your motor. You will also have to change the side cover on the engine as it does not have a hole for a kickstarter. Also, if I remember correctly, you have to remove the engine from the bike and split the cases to install the kickstarter shaft. You have to decide if it is worth it in the long run because usually by the time the battery is dead enough that it wont turn over, it is also dead enough that the ignitor quits working. You can kick it over all day but it wont crank if its not sparking.

 

I don't think you have to replace the cover -- there's a removable plug in place of the kick shaft... But otherwise, yeah.. You'll need a donor XS1100.

 

There appears to be a rubber cap, however it is not the case. For some reason yamaha glued a piece of rubber over the indention in the cover where the hole for the shaft is supposed to be. The maxim covers do not have the hole machined in the cover for the shaft to go through.
