Wondering if someone can help me out here. My maxim x rider has horrid brakes, I mean they suck. Pads are good, fluid is new, no leaks. Original brake lines, non rebuilt MC. (I have a feeling the last two are my answer). I need to get this bike some braking power. My magna will lock the front up at 30 mph (don't ask), but the maxim will just keep on goin'. I don't mind so much because I like the rear brake, but what can I do to get this thing to stop in better sequence?

What I really want to do is get a YX or FJ master cylinder and or find a set of calipers that have 2 piston set up vs a one. Anyone do a conversion like this, and if so, what did you guys use? Ideas, fling em my way...

FZR front end... but that would cost a few bucks.
Rebuild what you have and convert to stainless lines. I'll bet you find the happiness you seek for a reasonable cost. Chacal has parts.

I rebuilt the master cylinder on my X and the brakes are still very mushy. I couldn't get the front to lock up if I tried. I'm going to rebuild the bike piece by piece and will definitely be going with a brand new master cylinder and stainless lines.

    Braided SS lines will help.

What kind of pads did you put on?? They vary a LOT.

Did you de-glaze the discs before the pad replacement?

I can lock my front up with no problems.

Your calipers may be seized up a bit...Pads old and hard, or the pads are not floating.
I just pulled the pads off a pair of calipers where they were so stuck in the calipers that I had to pound them out.
One test you could do is take them off the bike and try to squeeze down on something tinner than the disc. Of course then you'll have to push them back apart to get them on the bike (and that can be difficult without ruining the pads).
OR if you take them off and try to force the pistons all the way open that would tell you they are moving freely (or not).
Just make sure you don't run out of fluid in the MC or you'll be bleeding the darn things and that's no fun without a vacuum pump.
