Have any of you installed a fork brace? I'm wondering if one would be helpful in the absence of the front fender.

I have the fender but that is an interesting question. When we did Artie's forks we were wondering what if an structural part the fender plays.

I'm interested in the answers here too.

The fender does help stiffen the front somewhat. If you remove the fender you will have handling issues. I tried it on one of my XS1100s,it was not a good idea. I made a small brace to replace the fender and problem was solved. I don't know the effects on your 650, but I think they are similar. Take the fender off and have a friend hold the bars still while you turn the wheel from side to side . You will see what I mean.

Yeah, that was one of the first things I noticed when I received my xj "ebay wonder." I've found plenty fork braces for newer bikes, but nothing for an 82 xj so far. Might have to put a fender back on.

Should be fairly straight forward to fabricate a bracket. If your fender is in good shape and you don't want ot chop it up. See if a salvage yard has a beat up one and use that brace as Scarecrow suggests.

I don't think you will find a ready made frok brace for the XJ, you will have to make one. I used some scrap flat metal and a piece of 4" pipe to make mine.
