where does this plug go it is not connected and it under the left side cover? i have also noticed that on the intake boots that they all have a little plastic cap that covers some sort of port but one only has a piece of rubber hose that comes from it and is ran in the same direction as the float overflow line can anyone help me with this? is this why she is running like $hit?

I'm not sure about the white plug.

However, I'm pretty sure you're referring to the vacuum ports on top of the intake manifold boots. Usually 1, 2, and 4 will be capped off and 3 will have a vacuum line to the petcock, which is what allows fuel to flow when the engine runs.

As I hear it, if it's running crappy, it's probably got a bunch of gunk and sludge in the carbs, that's a good place to start.

That rubber hose goes to the petcock to allow the fuel flow. If you have an aftermarket petcock (just on off, no vacuum line) and someone disconnected that line, it needs to be plugged like the other 3 vac ports.

If you take a cover off a vac port or it has an air leak (cracked covers) then it will run like crap no matter what, LEAN.

The vac line is supposed to go to the petcock to operate the flow. If there is no SUCTION from that line, the petcock won't open to allow fuel flow in RES or ON. Prime will always flow. If you DON'T have this style stock petcock, then you don't need the vac line. You can plug it with a golf tee and some tape until you get a proper vac cap.

If the line is not hooked up and sucking air, your motor will ALWAYS run like crap. That cylinder will be sucking raw air through the port.

the plug is a clear white in color and is located under the left side cover and has 2 female connector slots ijn to it. there is a green wire and a black wire. it could have slid down to that position from the left side fron under the seat. i dont have a pic of it but if you need more info let me know i will do my best to explain it.

I think here are (4) plugs under that side that meet that description.
One is the fuel low switch, one is the charging wires off the generator, one I believe is the low oil....I'd have to get the wiring diagram to be sure about the rest.
I would have bet on the low fuel switch but that one has "pins" not slots.
I'd guess side-stand switch since I doubt it would run at all without the others.

What color wires?? And I'm assuming an '86 XJ700?

On the 550's the plug is for the fuel gauge sender.

The plug with those wires if for the low fuel warning light.
There is a sensor in front of the fuel petcock with two wires (normally) running to the back of the gas tank where they are connected next to the battery.
It won't have any affect on the way the bike runs, you just won't get any warning when you are running low on fuel.

if you've just got the bike pop the seat off and check the airfilter make sure nothign has made a home in there that could be restricting your airflow. THe guys are correct on the line if there isn't an open port on your petcock(or broke tube) and the petcock has jsut a on and off then you need to cap that line.

but if it has on res and pri you need to hook that line up to the petcock or it won't deliver fuel (or poorly deliver fuel if your lucky). What does your petcock say?
