I just got an nice '81 750 Seca a month ago. I incorrectly adjusted the throttle cable too tight instead of putting slack in it as I intended. Started the engine, RPM pegged (12,000), and I shut it down as fast as I could. No oil on the deck, started fine after fixing my error. Actually seemed to run a little better on my way home.

Next day, the bike was hard starting. When it did start I got the "Head" problem indicator and red warning light. What do you think I'm into here?

islandstrength's situation brings up a question I have had for a while, Do these early 80's Xj's have a rev limiter like my late 80's and 90 CBRs have? IF the xj's do then islandstrength couldn't have hurt his engine from the high R's could he?

No rev limiter that I'm aware of; 12K for a half a sec shouldn't have hurt it; and the "HEAD" warning is for the headlight. (It thinks your headlight is out.)

hard start from overspeed could be from the valves floating and tapping the piston, and now they could be slightly bent and not seating. i dont think that happened, but a compression test would be a quick cheap and easy place to start.
