If I type in '1982 yamaha 650 seca' in Google 'Images' section a lot of bikes have full fairings.

What's that about? My title say's XJ650RJ and my engine is black, front headers black, rear cans chrome, front fender and everything else is black. Do I have a Midnight model?

People list differently, Midnight is MAXIM, not SECA I do believe they never did a midnight SECA.

Lots of people don't list them right, they don't have the right years, aftermarket parts, many different options for different years etc.

The ones with fairings are 650 turbo's, XJ650rl.
Try searching XJ650rj only imported one year.

Not US-market Secas; Midnight Max's yes. It could also have been painted. Does your engine serial number match your VIN?

I also have a black engine with chrome headers...my engine and VIN on the forks match.

Does this mean I may not have a US model Seca?

( insert picture of XJ's for DUMMIES, a reference guide for the rest of us)

Is there any way to tell from the VIN if you have a US model or say a Canadian model?

I know Chacal did a whole post on how to read your VIN, but it confuses me lol

Ummm....650RJ Seca engines (crankcase, jugs, heads, valvecovers, starter motor, gen cover, and side cover outer edges) were black, with un-painted oil pump cover "center" sections, and unpainted clutch cover center section. The edges of the cylinder jug fins were unpainted, too, but I'm still not real sure about the cylinder head fin edges. Exhaust system was beautiful shiny chrome.

Model and frame ID codes differ between the US and Canadian versions in this manner:

    1982 XJ650RJ Seca USA : 5V2
    1982 XJ650RJ Seca Canada: 5V3
    1982 XJ650RJC Seca Canada: 15U
Note: these bikes were painted red.
Note: some late-production versions (or perhaps all of them?) of these RJC bikes came with a factory-installed oil cooler.

Canadian versions came in either the standard Code 1U Quartz Silver color, or later models were finished in the Code 4N Cardinal Red color.....and I believe (although it's hard to sort out all the info out there) that the red Canadian bikes had YICS motors and oil coolers, but the silver bikes did not. US versions were supposedly always silver, always had non-YICS motors, and never had the oil coolers, although...........

Previously proficient poster Bosozuko made this one cryptic statement about his bike, and from I recall, he was usually a person who knew what he was talking about:

    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... =yics.html

I tried to follow-up and ask him about that issue, but alas, he disappeared shortly after that point in time, and the question was left dangling and hanging around, a plaintive plea and cry for insight and understanding, left forever unanswered........

Well. He also notes that the engine in his YICS-equipped 650RJ Seca is silver (rather than black). But in some other posts he hints that engine is really a 750 Seca engine that he installed into the bike (rather than being factory-equipped).

Dwayne V.---perhaps the world's greatest expert on 650 Seca models----also conforms that the red Seca models were Canadian only, and were YICS-equipped, but makes no mention of 650 vs. 750 engines:

huh... how 'bout that. I have a Canadian model according to the VIN. I don't know what color it originally was, but I'm guessing because it's a non- YICS and no oil cooler it was silver. (it's ruby red now.)

My brother bought it off of eBay for $400 from a guy in Buffalo, NY. Apparently it was imported. When he bought it, it had the paint job it has now.

    So who knows...
