Before I cleaned the carbs in the harborfreight.com ultrasonic cleaner, the bike felt smooth at idle. Now, it sounds smoother than ever when you listen from behind but you feel da,da,da,da,da,da,da, ect through the handel bars. When I color tuned it, i had the yics tool in place, turned out the mixture screw untill I saw orange/yellow, went a little farther till I could hear it start to run really bad, backed up to where the flame turned blue, and left it there. This was done on all cylinders with the engine plenty warmed up.
It seems like its got more power then before but is the rich side of color tuned better than the lean? I guess my bike was "dangerously" lean before. The plugs were pure white all the way up the insulator. I thought it ran great. Smooth idle, good throttle response, 50 mpg on a long ride with a windshield on, and a smooth rumble with that gear whine at idle. It ran this way in 90 degree weather and the colder it got outside, the better/stronger/smoother it ran. It got too cold for me to ride around 55 degrees. Whats safe?

Sounds to me that you have it just right for your bike Jim. For me and erring on the safe side, I would say on the slightly rich side of the blue flame is good.

Ride it a bit and do some plug reads. These bikes run better lean, but it's not a good thing long term.

You did check and adjust your valve clearances first, right?
