So two intermittent problems I seem to be having with my '82 650 Seca.

Turn Signals: This has happened once in both my last rides. Riding along, everything is going well, maybe about 20 minutes and i go to put the turn signals on and nothing. Left, right, both not turning on. Other electrical seems fine. The turn button doesn’t seem to be stuck and moves freely. After a couple more minutes of riding, it just starts working again. Then today the same thing happened. Could it just a fuse coming loose, or possibly something else I should be looking into. I have the stock fuse box, so I planning on upgrading it to the cap style fuses anyways. The fuses look fine right now, but hard to catch it 'red handed'

Tach: My seca will idle nice (pretty much 1050 dead on) when cold, and goes up a bit when warm. It sometimes seems to be idling at 2k, but I noticed that when I am idling at 2k if I shut off the engine all together, the tach only falls to 1k, not back to 0. If I tap on the glass a bit, it fall to zero. If I don’t turn off the engine and tap on the glass, it will fall to around 1400 or so. Anyone else ever have this problem? Other then the fact that my engine idles a bit high when warm, does this seem like a problem?

the turn signals could be a fuse, you can install an inline fuse holder until you replace the fuse panel to see if that takes care of it. you can also spray some electrical contact cleaner in the turn signal switch and see if that helps.

the tach probably just needs to be taken apart and cleaned/lubricated.

Turn signal problem could also be the momentary part of the turn signal switch or the cancelling unit.

The turn signal switch is actually two switches: one is SPDT to switch the flashing signal to Left or Right, the other is momentary and actuates the canceller module to enable the flasher to flash until time and distance expire.

If you've got dirty contacts in your switch, bad contacts on the canceller socket, or a flaky canceller, you could see this behavior. Thing to check is whether you also lose the horn next time you lose the signals - they're on the same fuse, so that would help narrow things down.

I finally gotback from a nice long vacation and am back on the bike :). So i have had the problem happen a couple more times, and when it does, I have pressed on the horn to see what happens. Everytime I do this, the horn works fine and then the signal starts working again immediately (i dont have to re trigger the signal, it just starts blinking)

I am at a loss of where the culprit is. Any ideas?

    Cheers

Dumb question, but how's your battery? Last time I had intermittent turn signal issues it turned out my battery was on its way out - the signals worked fine on the highway, but were goofy when I was slowing down to turn. Replaced the battery and everything worked fine after that.

I would guess that you have some corroded connections in your turn signal circuit based on your last findings. I would start at the turn signal switch and clean the hell out of it and pack with dielectric grease. do the same to all connections from there to the signals and to the battery - there will be a few.
