Just had a sort of strange non-XJ experience

Made the mistake of trolling Craigslist a bit the other day and came across what was listed as an '82 Kawasaki GPz 750. Thing is, the picture was the newer, '84ish, body style. Anyway, while the asking price was a bit high, the condition looked good, and I'd always liked those bikes, especially in red.

So, today I went over and looked at it and rode it. The sticker actually says early 1983, so it must be one of the first of the newer style, but still a 5-speed... weird. This is the first time in a few years I'd ridden anything besides my SECA. Of course, the posture and the feel of controls was entirely different, but what really surprised me was that it didn't pull nearly as well as my SECA. With chain drive and a higher rated stock HP, I would have expected significantly more pull. I should mention though, that the GPz was also popping like crazy, so I doubt the mixture is set up ideally.

Anyone have any experience with those earlier GPz's? Should I be considering another project, or just be happy with the SECA?

    Cheers,
    Paul

If you wanna make double-sure about the year of manufacture, check the sidestand. Subtle differences, but here's what an '84 should look like, albeit on a 900:

As posted locally. A little fixer-upper, looking for a best offer:

Well, after a couple of days, the sellers took me up on my offer, so I now have project #2. Fortunately, project #1, the SECA, is just about really really finished. I'm just waiting for a bit of dyno time to do a final tune on the fuel map.

Here's what the garage looks like now:

    :)

Thanks for the encouragement, Motavator, but I'm not sure my wife would agree about this keeping me out of trouble. Should be fun, though.

    Cheers,
    Paul
