The universal joint is knackered either side, is it possible to get spline thingy out without removing the swingarm? ive been told its possible but its in pretty bad shape ive no idea how its happened, plenty of hypoid in there. Oh and also any advice for what i may encounter as i delve in?. (750 Seca 1982, 40,000 on clock)

Hypoid gear oil goes in the final drive, you said universal joint..?

The U joint is at the back left of the motor, not inside the final drive.

Which one are you saying damaged?

Its the U joint thats knackered, i was just saying that i always looked after the final drive and look after everthing else, thats why i cant really understand why the U joint has chewed itself up after 40,000. I thought they were good 70,000 maybe? Anyway its the U joint and the spline coming off that im intrested in (which connects to the final drive).

the only way I can see to take it off is taking out the swing arm. You can pull the rear unit w/o the swing arm off yes but the U joint I believe is too big to fit thru the swing arm. It isn't the bad to take it off at all and give you a chance to check and replace the bearings if need be. The good news you have the more common U joint so you can pick one up for alot less than some of us with the X models and 900's.

the u-joint should come off the splines on the drive shaft with a little help once the engine is out of the way, so it's either engine or swing arm
i guess you could take the rear drive off and pry it out of the u-joint but the u-joint is still trapped by the swing arm and engine

I was at the shop the other day, they had a 750 Seca that had blown the rearend/final drive.
It was so bad the bike was over heating from trying to push the gears.
    Why it was brught in.
I thought either there was no oil in it or this guy must really beat on that bike.
    :D

Ok so we are saying that taking the swing arm off will be enough? By the way im not lazy me and the missus have a 20 month old and a 3 month old to run around for so as you can imagine im a bit strapped for time with the bike, i hope it all goes well because i'd hate to have to sell it. Sacrifficies must be made and all!. Thanks for the help and all as to be fair i flying blind with this one. I may aswell get round to doing the front forks at this time since theyve been leaking for a while. I prefer light maintaince to this kind of stuff! (a little out my depth maybe!) . It can and will be done!

the bolts that hold the u-joint to the engine are real tight, make sure your on them good
23 years ago the first night home for my son, at 4 AM we heard a cry and the wife and i both sat up in bed, she said "go back to sleep, i'll get him"
i took that to mean forever :)

im having real trouble getting this U.J. off. Still am no closer,, got a spare U.J. on the plus side. I have tried lifting the bike up with my bare hands and throwing it over the fence at the bottom of the garden. Im not strong enough. ;-(

Some models have a small metal ring (not really a "circlip", just a thin-wire retaining ring) at the head of the driveshaft splines that locks the driveshaft splines into the u-joint splines.......if you don't remove that ring, the driveshaft cannot be pulled off the u-joint. The ring is kind of hard to see when it's all put together..........

    The whole Rear-end comes off.
    Clear the way.
    Undo and remove everything.
    Remove the Brakes
    Wheel
Get everything removed until the Rear-end is held only by the Shocks and the two Swing-arm Pivots.
    Remove the Right Shock
Remove the Left and Right Swing-arm Axle Pivots
    Remove the Left Shock
Draw the SwingArm free and out and down
The Drive Axle will disengage from the U-Joint Splines

You need to remove the Swingarm to remove the U-Joint from the Engine Output Shaft.
