I read in the manual that my xj is not designed to be shifted with out the clutch. I find that the trany sounds better when I up shift without the clutch. At least for 3rd 4th and 5ith with no clucking sound. But when I use the clutch It makes a clunking sound when I change gears with the clutch in. What's up with that. Clutch or no clutch that is the question.
P.S I always use clutch when down shifting and I do down shift even thou the manual says to use brakes only and then shift into 1st.
    What do you guys do?

Jamings, I bet your clutch cable needs tightening, I had the same problem until I followed Rickomatic's advice and tightened it up. It even made it easier to find Neutral.

There is a thread where this was discussed - IIRC there was a general agreement that the clutch was an easier transition and less stress on the gears.

I think Deadulus is right could be your cable. Mine slips nicely into gear

glad you guys posted the clutch setup link! I have been fighting my clutch for a while... especially going from neutral to first. now, I have it set as Rick explained and will try it out in the morning!
