I have a 1980 xj650 maxim, we were having problems starting it and when it would start it wouldn't stay running, we replaced the battery, regulator/rectifier and spark plugs. It has ran great ever since, now it will not initially start with the starter button, you can start it by applying a screwdriver tip to the starter, then the button will work the rest of the day, it sits over night and you have the same problem again. I took the battery out thinking that because it leans a bit to the left that maybe the battery was low on water, no the water level was fine, I then hooked it up to the trickle charger and it showed that it did not have a full charge. This is my first bike and so i'm just learning (I do have automotive knowledge though). Does anyone have an idea of what may be causing my starter button not to work?

So in the morning you have to jump the starter with a screw driver.
Then the start button works after that?
    Strange indeed.
    I will ponder this one.
    Edit:
Could be a starter saftey is hanging up, once started and ridden vibration frees it up.

Here's a good THREADto start with.
There's a side stand switch, a nuetral switch and a clutch lever swiitch.
A repair manual willl help you to locate these.
If you have a multimeter you can check the switchs for continuity open and closed.

I'd rebuild the solenoid and clean out the starter button.
No side stand switch on the 80 Hound, those didn't appear on the 81 650 Max either.
