carb cleaning

    just got my 81 mid nght max on theroad (650) run like xzyt ,have to run cold start 1/2 to all the way on.orig. carbs were pretty gummed, sat for 15 yrs. put a set from an 80 650 on, out of salvage. fired up immediately have ran about 100 mi, but just isnt right . my guess is a good cleaning ,my question???? what exactly am i to clean and where are they all located :?: any input would help ! glad to be an XJer

    Go to the links section on this web site and click on the "Diy's and how to" link. Then select the "Cleaning the Hitachi Carbs" link. Study that for a few days and then let us know when you plan to start. We can walk you through a lot of glitches you may encounter. I also have acarb cleaning guide that can be quite helpful. If you want I will PM that to you. Just ask for it when you are ready.

    i just came out of the lounge, where i found a step by step put on by rickomattick i believe. very helpful. as the season comes to a head, imay not get to it till winter. but it seems to be something i can do........... however ,i also put a header on the bike too. i have read some of the other chat and accordingly the jets may need to be changed also???????????? which poses more ?'s what size, bigger or smaller? so far i'vemanaged to do all myself ,but technical is NOT my bag

    When changing to a 4 to 1 header you will always go to a larger jet. Most headers come with a chart for selecting the jet size. Post a question similar to this in the XJ modifications forum and they can answer more accurately.
