Does anyone know where to find highway pegs for an 86 maxin x? Also, is there any way to get a different sound out of it? roght now it is stock and sounds like a crotch rocket. is there a way to make it soung like a cruser or at least a little louder without spending much money?

There are several sites where you can find highway pegs (Dennis Kirk, JC Whitney, etc) that will bolt to the frame.
You not going to get your XJ to sound anywhere near a cruiser (V-twin) no matter what kind of exhaust system you put on it. You can only go louder than stock (and more annoying) I tried several combinations on my 750 Seca and ended up with stock Harley mufflers on mine finally. Even the canister type systems get annoying after riding all day (4 into 1)
These engines just don't sound good with loud exhaust systems on them. It's just the nature of the beast. Most sport bikes have 4 cylinder engines that run high rpms, so that's the sound you have to work with. If you want a more thumpy, cruiser sound, you will have to get a V-twin engine or at least a two cylinder engine to get a lower rpm engine that doesn't "scream" thru the gears.
Even the old 650 Yamahas sound better then these XJs to because of the lower rpm range and longer stroke.

I love the sound of my Harley mufflers. They're louder, but not obnoxious.

I'm running a Mac 4-2, it's a tad louder than stock, but not obnoxious. You don't want this to sound like a Harley. It's not. Be proud. My Dad, who rides an old Shovelhead, said he appreciated the sound of my bike, because around here, it's 100% unique, so he always knows when I'm coming. Of course, with the late 60's Shovel, I can pick him out of a line-up of Harley's too.

You could go to a Harley rally and record someones bike. Then play it back on a loop as you go down the road...

You should be able to find engine guards and highway pegs easily enough.

It's never gonna sound like a Harley, or any other V-twin. Different engine design, firing order, exhaust pulses, etc...

I have a 4-1 on mine, and it's really louder than I like. Time to pull the baffle out and re-wrap it.

Do you just want highway pegs or forward controls?
I bolted these onto my Seca 750 and the are fantastic.

They are actually designed for the Maxim frame but I only need to swap in some longer mounting bolts.

I have added some painted steel tubing to cover the all thread linkages since the pics were taken. I think the Mfg. offers a linkage kit though. I just fabbed up my own.
