    Hey All,
I have a 82 xj750 maxum that won't keep running unless you keep the choke on a little. Is this telling me that it is running to lean? I have pulled the plugs and they look pretty good with it running like that. I just bought this bike and trying to figure out how to fix. Thanks, Bryan

I would say yes - with the choke on, you're running your enrichment circuit, which is adding gas to your mix. If the plugs are tan running with the choke on...well, that's probably not right.

Have you adjusted the idle screw? Perhaps it needs to be turned in a bit...

Dirty carbs is the first thing that I would be looking at. Pull them off and pull the float bowls. That will tell the whole story.

I agree with MN-Maxims. Regardless of what the bike is doing I would clean the carburetors.

It's always the Carbs. Always. Unless you're running Pod air filters, then I'd blame those. If you're running stock, something ain't right in those carbs. Always the carbs.

If I open the float bowls can I reuse the carb gaskets that are there? what am I looking for when I do? I have to say that I have rebuilt a few car carbs but never messed with the ones for a bike.

I'd do a quick compression test on the engine as I believe if one cylinder has poor compression it can do this sort of thing (though I think it's usually only at idle).

yes you can reuse the carb bowl gaskets, just make sure when you take them off the first time you are very careful they have probably been stuck there a long time, and when you put them back on make sure they are good and tight but dont over do it.

Thanks to everybody that replied. I just got the engine back from having a broken valve cover bolt removed. Frame is still at the welder getting repaired because the guy that sold it to me failed to tell me that it had a broken frame. So hopfully I can begin putting her back on the road next week.

Has anyone tried putting a 750 seca mac exhaust on a maxim? They are basicaly the same bike as far as I can tell. If so is it good or is there something else to look at?

    Thanks,
    Bryan
