Unfortunately, there aren't many of those left...

I keep reading posts about strange electrical issues cropping up after repairs and getting sparks when doing this or that; I know you experienced mechanics know this but for all the newly-minted motorcycle mechanics out there:

BEFORE BEGINNING ANY MAJOR WORK (not just electrical)

    DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.

Just basic auto shop stuff but often overlooked especially by those who haven't had the benefit of formal training or years of experience.

    Saves a lot of grief.

Good tip! I know that I never took auto shop and I certainly don't have years of experience. Besides, it's not like disconnecting the battery will reset your radio channels or anything on the bike! :D I hate having to reset them in the car when I disconnect the battery.

Great point Fitz. Easy to draw a spark or short a wire and damage expensive parts

Good reminder, I am guilty of not disconnecting as much as I should. New to wrenching on motorcycles, I noticed that bikes are unique vehicles that place their fuel cells on, next to, and even wrap around their electronics, batteries, and coils.

great advice for bikes, hehe.. Don't try it on a newer ford car/truck with the sync setup. Yeah you will be heading to the dealer. I guess when the battery is disconnect for a period of time the pcm needs to be reprogrammed. At least thats what they are telling us at the body shop.

Yeah, and it's what the VW dealer "Service Advisor" butthead told me about my '08 Wabbit. The $107 factory service manual however, says to disconnect the battery before beginning any work, and nothing about reprogramming.

    Who to believe?

And you DEFINITELY gotta when working on your XJ. Even when doing things like pulling the carbs or other "non-electrical" work. Too easy to snag a wire.
