    Hi Guys,
I would like to know how long the tool is for checking the gear oil. How deep does the tool go into the case? I have never seen one.

    Thanks

The engine oil is the gear oil. So the glass on the side of the engine is the one you should check.

In case you ment the final drive, put the bike on the center stand and fill it up until it is level with the filler hole.

    When you say gear oil do you mean your final drive at the Diff?{rear wheel}
There is no tool to my knowledge. The oil level should be at the level of the filler hole.
I dont think it is possible to overfill.
The above is only for your final drive.
Engine oil should be checked through the sight window which should be next to your rear brake pedal. There is a mark on the sight glass for the correct level.
All done on level ground on the centrestand, preferably after the bike has not moved or run for several hours.
Sorry if this seems a little basic but would not want to give incorrect information.
Answered the gear oil question and then clicked I may have misunderstood the question, would not want to tell anyone to fill the sump to the level of the filler hole!

The XJ1100 used a dipstick that was part of the tool kit to check the final drive gear oil level. Part number 2H7-2815A-00-00.

    I bet Chacal has them.

Hmm, how do you change the final drive oil? Is there a bolt and a filter like the engine oil has?

That tool is also STILL available through Yamaha for about $7.00. One end checks the Final drive and the other checks the Middle gear level.

I just saw one sell on e-bay for $10.50 plus shipping. I thought that was high for a little peice of plastic. If a guy knew the measurements you could just use a popcicle stick and mark it with a sharpe.

Yes what are the measurements on the tool. I replaced the rear gear oil and filled it until it leaked out. I hope that is ok.....I know that he middle gear should not be filled to the top. So if you have the tool and can measure it for me I would appreciate it.

Be patient, when I get home (tonight after 8P) I have the measurements in a file and I'll post them on here.
DO NOT fill it up to the filler hole...you need to use the tool, or take a stick or zip-tie or whatever and mark it with the correct dimensions like I did and use that. It's a pretty close tolerance between under and over filled.
