air jets

    Hi XJer's,

    Picked up a spare carb from an '82 750 Maxim. The jet sizes are almost all different (bigger number) to my (kinda lean) current set up. I'm tempted to just drop them in there and hope for sweet running and no crazy revs at idle.

    Bigger numbers mean richer running right ?

    But for Air jets does bigger number mean leaner ? How do Air jets match into the system ?

    A link or idiot's guide would be great.

    bigger numbers = larger hole in the jet, whether it's a main, pilot, or air jet.

    In the case of an air jet, it can affect many different things: the amount of vaccuum it takes for the piston to rise, the amount of fuel that is drawn up from the bottom of the float bowl via a pilot or starter jet, etc. it all depends on where and how the the jet is installed in the carb, and the passages linked to it.

    To answer your question more directly, bigger numbers do not necessarily mean richer when it comes to air jets. and changing the sizes will REALLY affect certain throttle postions in the carb, and thus the overall running of the bike.
