Just curious what the point of all the rubber tubes coming off various parts of my carbs (2 on the lower throttle tube and 4 attached to the carbs just below the carb hats). Are they overflow safeties? Are they even necessary?

Any thing bad happen if I take them off, tape them together and make a wicked blowgun with them?

Oh yeah... 1985 xj700, Hitachi carbs.

They are breathing tubes for the carburetor Smurfs. Do not endanger their health.

Seriously though; if they just hang down open, then yes, they're vent and/or overflow drains. I wouldn't remove them, stuff could go the other way...

Okay, here's another question: One of the hoses is attached to the same shaft as the fuel line... what's the deal with that? Should the two lines join and the fuel could be sent through both?

Thanks for the info. The smurfs thank you too. :)

I suspect it's a "return" line for emissions sake. I don't know; I wouldn't recommend messing until you do some more thorough reasearch or we maybe hear from another later Max owner who knows.

Is there some compelling reason to mess with this plumbing or do you need something new to fix?

They're just flip flopping everywhere, plus, I'd rather know what they are for rather than not know.

My XJ900 is similarly endowed. I zipped tied them together in pairs. That helps a bit. And yeah, they're vent/overflow hoses.

Mine has these too, and on the battery. The main purpose would be for safety overflow - seeing as bikes can lean over at quite extreme angles when cornering, better to dump the overflow on the road than in the crank case.

At least on teh X there is a hoop down by the brake light switch that they should be long enough to go through the hoop and direct the flow out the bottom of the bike.
