Welcome Jay - It should work fine. The round buckets are mostly the same. I am rehabbing an XS400 (82) I kind of like the black bucket. Let me know if you get rid of your old bucket, I could use one in good shape, mine is OK but not great.

Be careful; they may LOOK the same but due to different contours, depths and shapes, the distance between the mounting holes (side-to-side) CAN be different sometimes, depending on year and model. The best bet is simply to measure. That distance (the space between the ears) is really the only limiting factor.

There's also the LOCATION of the lower pivot bracket mounting point that differs between most of the Yamaha headlight buckets.....some are on the right of center, some are left of center, some are way up front (where the outer bezel/rim attaches), some are way towards the back...........

Wow I stand corrected - I never noticed those differences. The ones I have dealt with have been the same or close enough that I didn't notice.

Given the bucket includes the mount a lot of the differences mentioned are negated. Here is a problem I see - if the 83 XS is like the 82 the instrument cluster mounting bolts are attached to the cluster and go through the headlight bracket and are attached with nuts.

On my 650 and on this bucket the cluster mounting bolts are separate and screw in to the headlight bracket. You many have to do some mods to make it work.
