OK, been putting the fork seals off till I got ready for a new tire, now it's time! I pulled the tubes off. Now what? I take it I need to unscrew the big hex on top of the tube while holding pressure down on the spring? I got a manual, but wasn't really sure if I needed that tool from Yam it called for.

    thanks guys.

Go to the hardware store and get a 2' length of 1/2"-13 threaded rod. Also, get four nuts to go with the rod (1/2"-13 of course). Thread two nuts onto each end and jam them together tightly. Place one end into the upper fork tube and turn everything upside down. I used a wrench to hold the bottom nuts with my foot and turned out the hex head screw in the other end. Reverse for reassembly.

Be carefull installing the oil seals.

This is a good reference as well: http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=8355.html

I just did mine last night (with brake pads) in about three hours which included a trip to the hardware store.

I had some rod and nuts in the shop and whipped up a tool like you were talking about. 1/2 nuts are too big for my fork, 7/16 too small. I'll go pick up a metric nut and see if I can make it work.
