I will start from the beginning

    81 Seca 750.
After reading a few threads, I realized that I was shifting it to early.(about 4-5k) I have read the you can “really feel the power at 7k. I don’t! After 5 k I get a vibration. I feel it “power” at 4k . My plugs are light tan. New oils . new tires balanced. I have checked every bolt I have seen for tightness and torque.. Is this normal?

There is a normal harmonic buzz - Mine is about 5k - above or below it doesn't vibrate.

As to shifting too early - for normal driving around IMHO 4 to 5k is fine. What is being referred to is if you start in first run her to 7 or 8 k then 2nd to 7 or 8 k etc she will really fly and you will feel her pull through the speed strongly. If your running 60 and want to pass drop to 4th and open up you will rocket by.

Unless the valves have never been touched so they're floating once the motor hits about 5K...

You should be able to pull redline in 2nd, 3rd, 4th (OK, yes that's a speeding ticket most places) without issue.

Yeah... The one thing I noticed is that speeometer is useless if you pulling those RPMs though a few gears. i guess it is normal in most bikes. Friend has new Guzzi and it does the same thing.. Thanks Guys

Sorry I keep forgetting you guys only have 5 gears. I can only get TO speeding ticket territory in 3rd... but then I have 3 left to get in trouble with. I've been considering renaming the black bike "Willing Accomplice" or maybe "Co-Conspirator"

Seriously though, I regularly cruise at 6K in 6th, which is about 72-75mph on the 550. Motor is silky smooth at those RPMs.

I was wondering what the big deal everybody was making about the power the XJ's make starting at 6k; I just wasn't feeling it. It'd go, but it wasn't anything to wax poetic about...

    Then I adjusted my clutch.

After that I took it out to a local farm road (about 3 miles' worth of recently repaved, nearly traffic-free runway) and ran it up.

And held on for dear life. Holy Delta-V, Batman! I did it a couple more times and darned if I didn't have a goofy grin for an hour...

I didn't even know the clutch had been slipping, so definitely check that if you're not getting the acceleration you think you should.

Oh, and I get the "buzz" at 5K too... Good to know it's normal, I was worrying a little bit.

And by the way, Fitz, I've never had mine up to redline in third. 8.5-9K in second is a speeding ticket anywhere in Illinois. (In other news, yes, I love my 750!)
