XJ650J Electrical issue?

    I have an 82 XJ650J. The bike won't start unless I put the bike into gear first. After starting, the bike can be put into neutral and all is well.

    Any ideas of what to check or what electrical component may be failing, shorting?

    Does your neutral light come on? Can you start it in neutral with the clutch pulled in?

    The neutral comes on and the bike will not start in neutral or with the just the clutch pulled in. Once I put it into gear it cranks right up.
