I need some advice here, the shift lever on my maxim keeps coming loose and makes it very hard to shift. Its as tight as it can go on the spindle but the spindle is very worn, and needs to be replaced, not a hard project but I need to know what that spindle is called so I can get a new one installed. I'm very new when it comes to working on bikes. Down right ignorant actually but I think part of riding is working on your own machine so I'm learning.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Drop Chacal a line. He's really good about figuring out what the part you need is called, and odds are, he's got one in stock.

I would look on an OEM parts finder on a yamaha parts dealer page, then ask Chacal what he can do for you for a replacement.

If you're talking about the shaft the shifter pedal actually clamps to, it's Yamaha pn 4H7-18120-01-00, SHIFT LEVER ASS'Y. The pedal is called a "pedal."

That's your part number and description; unfortunately Yamaha shows it as no longer available. Time to get ahold of chacal.

In case you need it. I was at work this was at home. I believe you want #5. (Don't worry about the name of the pic, the '81 and '82 are the same.)

are you sure only the shaft is worn ? they would normally ware together, so maybe replacing the shifter would be enough to tighten it up

If you are looking for the shift lever assembly, part 5 or any other part from the motor you may need. I am thinking about parting out the motor from my 82 xj650 parts bike.
