hey guys im real new. but been reading these old forums while ive been building my xj650 bobber. you've been really helpful.
i got it running yesterday and was really stoked so i hopped on to take it around the block and it won't go anywhere. there is lots of power. when i let out the clutch it starts to engage. then when i give it some gas it acts like its still in neutral then it revs down really slow back to idle. it idles fine.
is this a carb problem? or is this the clutch? or both?
    thnks

i replace the #40 pilot jets with #41
    cleaned and bench synced carbs
added the pvc pipe single pod filter for intake
    checked plugs
had to use starter fluid to get it running maybe its getting to much air.
should i change the main jets? running 110's

when you let the clutch out all the way the bike just sits there and revs up?

Tighten? if it's slipping it's probably too tight - see the link it has a great write up by Rick on adjusting...

serious detail in that article. well, before i read that i adjusted the cable at the hand lever tighter towards the lever. when i tried it i took off super fast! i guess that's all it was.
    awesome!
i'll read into ricks article more to make sure. thnks

also the spring that's on the cable where it meets the clutch case is broken and i can't figure out how to get that weird bolt off.
it has jagged edges and a hole in the middle with a c-clamp hanging around it.

You mean the eclip (#13)? you just pop it off and the arm should come off. Chacal sells the spring I had to replace mine too.

    yeah yeah the e clip
ok so it just slides up... that makes sense. thnks very resourceful
i bought a spring a while back before i took the bike apart. i just couldn't figure it out.

so just ran around the block.. its running pretty good. but i still had to hit it with the starter fluid to get it going.
too much air in the mix?

I don't know about the mix you have a unique set up that may be a bear to tune. Cold start you should need a bit of the enrichment circuit. Also depends how clean you got your carbs and if the enrichment circuit is squeaky clean. Are your float levels good? Have you synced?

If you liked that write up take a look here

I have most of these printed out and in a book for reference.
