One day while working on my carbs my tank fell and landed up side down with a sick thud. I did not want to turn it over for fear of what I was going to see, but gas was going everywhere. So I turned it over and sure enough there was dent the size of a tennis ball about a 1/4" deep. Question is what is the best way to pull this dent with out destroying the paint or tank.

I had a long dent oing by the house and noticed the dent.n the right rear quarter panel of my truck and one day the front doorbell rang. A dude said he was driving by the house and noticed the dent (as if). After some deliberations (he wanted $500 at first) he pulled the dent using a suction cup with a plunger that really pulled a vacuum. Wham the dent was pulled! He wet sanded the area, masked it off and applied a waterproof primer. The dent was freakin' gone! I mean "lost in space" type gone. I paid him $75 for 20 minutes work.

This would work great for a tank dent. Probably would not even have to primer and paint.

Good luck! I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it!

If you can't get a suction cup to work you could try this....If you have a compressor, carefully pressurize the dent out...
Take the gas cap off. Close the petcock. Put your hand over the tank filler hole. Slip an air nozzle of some sort between your finders and slowly apply air. Watch the tank to make sure no other areas look like they want to bulge out. If everything looks good add air at a slightly quicker rate and more pressure. When you feel confident that you won't get any unwanted results, you can add the air in quicker bursts and increased volume until it (hopefully) pops the dent. I would do this as a LAST RESORT though. IF you have any weak seams in your tank, this will show you where they are and then you'll be dealing with a dent AND a leak....

I had a paintless dent guy fix a dent in a tank with a glue puller. They glue a stud to the dent and use a puller to slowly pull the dent. If it's not done right it will pull the clear coat but mine didn't.

Prepare yourself for this, what I am about to tell you may save you hundreds and cost me thousands lol Please note this works great for hail dents on aircraft, cars, etc wich is how I learned it.So here it is the paintless dent repair secret of the trade noone wants you to know, mistify your friends lol. So here it goes Youll need a welding glove and a chunk of dry ice shaped proportional to the dented area but larger than the dent using your gloved hand hold the ice over the dent you dont need to press down hard or anything just make contact as even as you can.Theres going to be some squeeling noises coming from the metal surface at first any other squeeling will be coming from you as you witness that magic happen in front of your eyes lol you will note that you have painlessly effortlessly repaired your dent and theres no damage to your paint or clear either and it cost you about 2.50 lol. This doesnt work on a krease but great on all kinds of stuff. It aint as cool as walking on water but it will sure make your buddies smile the first time they see you do it.
    Your welcome

    Hey ratchet, 3 questions..
By "chunk of dry ice shaped proportional to the dented area" you mean the overall size has the approx profile of the dent?

How do you 'size' the dry ice...chip away at it with a screwdriver/hammer?

and most importantly...where can you get just a small amount of dry ice...in fact, where can you get it period?

I have a couple dents on the project bike I'd like to try this with!!

You can usually get dry ice from any welder supply store. They use it as a bulk shielding gas for welding. You also can use a can of keyboard spray cleaner (duster stuff). Just turn it upside down and spray the liquid on the dent it will use quite a bit of the can but it is cheaper than driving to the far and few between weld shops.

Dry ice can be had at lots of grocery stores you usually need to ask for it,Try the deli first or look in the ice cream section Im not sure where everyone lives but food lion, krogers, publix, some iga's all have the stuff in 8 x 12" blocks its about 2" thick ,size may very. The keyboard aerosol cans will work but I've not had the same results with them because the propellant/gas runs all over and doesnt stay where you need it long enough to get a lasting desired affect. To answer your question on shaping I like a good rasp or if you cant wait an angle grinder can mow it down in a second or two.You shouldnt have your dent come back after use if it does theres a small krease line causing it and when you krease metal your essentially stretching it out and thus must be rolled out or filled in with filler and hidden.I hope that helps some.
