thanks. not worried. I would like to eliminate the sound however. the pipes have a nice low sound but at 3000 a whistle is emmited. any way to eliminate or lessen that whistle?

ps when I let off throttle or give more throttle the sound dissapears. only at or around 3000rpm when holding steady. still middle gear?

Not likely. Can you locate the source? Only while moving or even when standing still?

only while moving. any gear at 3000rpm holding steady (cruising in 3rd at 40km/hr)
sounds like the cam area but I assume something with air flow ie exhaust or intake, sounds like air(it's a whistle...). very deceptive when on the bike to pinpoint sound. my buddies 82 maxim does the same thing only you can't hear his as well because he punched the baffles out of the pipes.

Yea but if it was air flow as in intake or exhaust i would think it would do it sitting still. Could be air flowing over engine/frame. Check for small gaps that could act as a whistle. My 650 makes some wind noises at various speeds

My 82 XJ650 Maxim does the same thing at the same speed. I personally like the sound. I always thought it was normal for these bikes and it's actually why I bought this one. 8)

I love the whine but the description sounds different. I hear the whine above and below 3k although it is drowned out a good bit by the engine above 3k

I know what you are talking about with the typical XJ whine, and yes that is music. this is a whistle, chirping, don't know how to describe it. not wind noise because any gear at the same RPM holding it steady does it, it's not dependant upon speed. to be honest, never tried holding it at 3000rpm without driving it.
I have an 83 XL 600R that has a chirp and someone told me that it is exhaust baffles, etc. never tried to change it. could it be the same on the XJ? again, the thing runs strong, no signs of any issues, buddies bike does the same thing just not as prominant.
sounds like there is no solid answer. because the thing runs great, I'm satisfied. thanks for all your input, please continue to comment if you have any other possible solutions or your bike does the same thing..

My 82 750 makes a vibrating kinda rattle at about 5,000 rpm It's always done it and I can't figure it out so I just live withit by staying of of 5,000 rpms whenever possible.

I've also been told my bike has a whine to it but I don't really seem to notice
