I took the carbs off of my 86 maxim X (mikuni 33mm) and cleaned them up. I noticed on the front of the carb there is a brass plug in the casting of the carb body. Well, all except one which has been broken off. It looks as though somthing is missing from inside. How much grief is this going to cause me? Also there are hose nipples between two of the carbs. What goes there and where do those hoses go to? Thanks for any help you can give.

The Pilot Screws are sealed with Brass plugs at the Factory,

Having one missing isn't good. You'll need to find a replacement.

The two hose nipples are vents. Their hoses are sometimes short ones vented to atmosphere beneath the airbox.

Do a your best imitation of a Dentist. Drill the middle of the plug with a
small drill ... keeping in mind that the plug is only about the width of a dime ... and below the Plug is the very small slotted head of a solid brass Pilot Screw. Use light pressure on the drill, drill it in multi-touches ... anticipating the drill-through.

Screw a sheet metal screw in the hole. Grab the screw with your vice-grips, count to three and pull it out.

Shine a light in the hole that wasn't plugged. Either it is gone ... or, possibly still in there all chewed-up on top, that there's nothing left of the wings atop the Screw ... which will mean that you have some more Dentistry to perform!

Is there a need to put the brass plugs back on top of the pilot screw? or just leave them out and throw them away?

Have we determined that the Screw is missing, or ... in there, bottomed-out, with a chunky nub that needs to be dealt with?

If the Screw was grabbed, for the part, to replace one messed-up elsewhere ... there's probably a very tiny flat washer with an O-ring beneath it, in there ... at the bottom.

Rick, thanks for the info. You have confirmed my worst nightmare. The casting is broken off so much that there is only 1/8" to the bottom. I can clearly see the bottom without a flashlight. I guess my next option is to replace the carb. Where can I find a 33mm Mikuni carb at? They have em at www.bikebandit.com for $300. :?

Flea-Bay is an option, I've seen plenty of carb banks go for anywhere around $60-150 a pop. Might be worth your while to get and rebuild another set and use your current set as parts.

Are you absolutely sure it's Mikuni. I measured-up the intake on some parts carbs I'm pretty darn sure are off an XJ-Bike -- not 100% sure about that -- and they look like Hi-tots; not Mix. They're 33's though. I bought them for parts.

The Environmental Protection Agency needs to send me Super-Fund money to clean 'em up though. The body is aluminum -- patience and elbow grease will clean it.

I'm sure they do but your question was "what are Hi-tots?". I'm sorry if I misunderstood.
