Hi all, New here. I've got an 82 750 maxim full dresser with about 33,000 miles on it. Apparently my starter has decided to give up the ghost. The solinoid clicks but starter wont engage or turn over. I'm looking at around $400.00 for a new one if I can find one. So my question is Can the starter be rebuilt? or does anyone have a good used one for sale?

Tried jumping across the solenoid ? Or pull the starter and tried hooking it up to the battery?
Might just be a bad solenoid, bad connection(Pos on starter or motor ground to battery) or dirty starter brushes.

Thanks for the tips guys I'l try all of that . I thought it might be the solenoid but when talking to someone who "Knows" they said if the solenoid clicks it's good. but just to make sure I'm going to try that first.

Apology accepted Razz I sure wish I'd found you guys sooner. I've owned my bike for 4 years now and I just love it. When I first got it the owner (not sure if he was the original) said he was going to clean it all up and strt riding again but decided to buy a newer bike. It neededs new tires front brake pads and rear brake light switch. That was it! And I got it really reasonablely priced. Course I've done some polishing on it myself, fixed what it needed and have been riding ever since. It came with a am fm cassette player in the fairing with speakers, but the radio has since croaked so I removed it and the speakers and covered the holes. I decided I really didn't need it anyway and besides I couldn't hear the thing over 45 mph which is how I ride most of the time.
Anyway, I'm going to have to do what I can to get it back on the road soon. I don't want to buy a new starter if I don't have to so I'll be trying your ideas.
    Thanks again

make sure the key is off and it's in neutral when you cross those solenoid terminals

    Good news all,
I was trying to suss out the source of my problems and I started out by juming across the solenoid and nada SO began to suspect it was the solenoid. Just to make sure I removed the starter and checked it by grounding it to the motor and touching the terminal connection to the + side of the battery, It worked so that pretty much confirmed that it was the solenoid. Then I installed the starter again and just for s & g's I tried to start the bike. To my amazement the starter worked just fine and the bike fired right up. After numerous times of restarting the bike it worked every time. Not only that but it seems like the starter is turning over better than it used to.
The only explanation fo r this I can think of was a bad connection on the starter terminal. ANy body else ever experience anything of this sort?
The end result is bike starts just fine, and I had to buy no new parts.
    A happy ending indeed.

I wish my solenoid would have been good, I took my starter off and cleaned it, in the process I barely tightened the + post nut and the +post bushings snapped and broke. So much for 29 year old plastic parts haha.
    Solenoid is shot to.
    Congrats on the fix! :D
