Does anyone know how well XJ's tend to do using this type air filterrather than the single cartridge type? Also, if I were to go with something like this, would I be able to lose the big airbox under the seat?

    Thanks in advance,
    Beardking

What type are you referring to? Is there supposed to be a pic here or something?

I believe they are called pod filters. In the original post "this type air filter" is actually a link to an ebay auction.

The short: Yes you can use pod filters, yes that lets you get rid of the airbox.
The long: Switching to pod filters plays havoc on your carbs - you will spend much time and sweat tuning the carbs to work properly with pod filters. This gets worse if you have an aftermarket exhaust. We're talking about jetting, new adjustable needles, drilling the slides, and many, many, many test runs and re-adjusting.

I've known a few who had them, and unless you're really looking to tune & increase power, they're not worth the hassle. Most I've known have gotten rid of them in favor of the stock airbox with a K&N filter (and even that will likely require jetting).

Yes, that's what people refer to when they say they have "pod" filters.

I can tell you one big advantage I see of running the pods. I can have my carbs off of the bike in less than 5 minutes. Try that with a stock airbox...

A lot of work in either respect. Which would you rather deal with, difficulty in removal occasionally or the misery of hours (if not days of tuning to get your jetting balanced? I'd rather the stock arrangement to simplify troubleshooting a parts availability but the power gains the pods offer can be enticing.

Well, I guess I'll let you know once I get mine all tuned in!!

Right now I'm running with stock jetting and with the mixture screws 3 out. I've been reluctant to do too much messing because right now it runs good enough to cruise around, and I know it's in bad need of a sync. Plus I have other more pressing issues to take care of at the moment.

However, right now I notice a flat spot around 2k RPM's (not sure exactly since my tach isn't working 8O  ), and it seems to lose power above 6k or so as well. I'm sure larger mains will take care of the high-rpm power loss, while the 2k rpm flat spot will be the stinker to work out. But like I said, I'll give you guys a full report when I finally get to the point where it's tuned perfectly. It's got pod filters and a Mac 4-2 taper-tip exhaust.

So, without sounding too much like a poser, you would suggest I not mess with them if I was only going for them because I like the look better, huh? :)

Exactly! I observed that you have plans for a chop later so I'm assuming you'll want everything to look "just so". Pods wouldn't be out of the question, I'm simply passing on the heads up on what an undertaking it is. You could always try to fab up your own air box out of aluminum if you were really bent on customizing it but I don't expect it would perform any better than the stock unit (just thought of it, pardon if it sounds silly). Looking forward to seeing your efforts what ever road you take.
