I've had really good results running Rotella diesel oil.... I believe its 5-40w but I've only seen it in one weight so double check that. Plus it's cheap and doesn't contain anything that will mess with the clutch afaik. I ran the synthetic version because I split some with a friend on one oil change and my clutch started acting up so I switched back and its been grand ever since.

My friend runs it on his new street triple and put almost 10k miles on his bike last year and the oil analysis came back excellent fwiw.

I wouldn't use 5W-anything in an XJ when it calls for 20W or 10W...

I used the same oil in my new xj 1100 and I could here a knocking that did not sound rite when the bike was warm. I did some research and found out that GTX 20w50 was the best in petroleum based oils as far as viscosity breakdown under the kinds of heat that air cooled inline fours make.
I change the 15-40 out for the GTX 20-50 and the engine sounds normal when hot. I used the ROTELLA 15-40 in my other bikes with good results, But not in my Yamaha. Just a heads up.

I wouldnt use it, just for one reason it is synthetic , another reason, I read on here that non MC oil for cars has stuff taken out of it that MC's need.
I guess you could say you get what you pay for.... :)

Castrol 4T. Designed specifically for 4 stroke motorcycles and is designed to hold up under the extreme heat loads of air cooled engines. They are able to leave zinc and one other additive in place while they had to remove them from their automotive oils to meet federal pollution guidelines.

It is available in 10W40 and 20W50 weights. I use 20W50 in both my BMWLT because it meets BMW's specs and my also in my Maxim as protection against heat breakdown. It's interesting that then LT is a water pumper and BMW still calls for 20W50.

It's also readily available at auto parts stores and is reasonably inexpensive at about $4 a quart.

the volvo penta oil cost maybe 23dollar for 1L in stores and i can buy it for 4dollars so it is not a cheap oil. i have it in the bike right now but havent driven it much.

    sjmannen,

This is really quite simple. I am at work now so can't check my factory manual for the correct designation oil but I'm sure someone will chime in soon.

It really doesn't matter which oil you use as long as it meets the service designation for the Maxim. The Volvo Penta oil is for water cooled marine applications, yes? It may or may not meet the service requirements for an air cooled motorcycle but if it does and you have a source? No problem. Use it.

Saving a buck or two by using an incorrect API service level oil may prove to be false economy in the mid/long run if it can't handle the heat and loads for your bike.
