8O Hi everyone heard of this site talking to someone on craigslist about some carbs he had for sale. Excellent site, I recently bought a 1980 xj 650 maxim-I I guess the I stands for inline i'm guessing, anyway love the bike. I had a 1982 Seaca xj 550 in my younger days but had to sell her due to baby and wife thinking I wouldn't be around to see her grow up, now that I'm older I wanted more of a cruiser but still the seca feel, other than shaft drive and 5 gears instead of six the bike still has alot of the same characteristics of my 550. Anyway to the point when I bought this bike It only had 17000 miles on it,for a 29 yr old bike thats nothing the guy wanted 1275 would only let me jew him down 75 bucks but I had to have it after I took it for a ride because it just felt right and after not riding for 19 yrs I was stoked on the way home about 20 miles vancouver wa to woodland wa It ran great the next day I had to switch it over to reserve and it started to sputter and choke I put it on prime for awhile and got it home look in the tank and see the nastiest red cloudy gas iv'e ever seen dumped the gas put new gas in it,aparently the guy left the gas in there for a long time because the tank had bubbles on it and when you scratched away the bubbles there was a leak I finaly got another tank on ebay but the damage was done I took the float bowls off cleaned them out really good but now the bike will not idle It runs great at highway speeds but loads up when I come to a stop, but what is weird is it only does it after its been warmed up could this be a coil problem any help would be greatly appreciated.

so there's probably no fuel filter. my guess is your pilot circuit is clogged. it consists of the larger fuel jet in the bowl area, the smaller air jet under the rubber diagphram up top, and the mixture screw on the top side - that's all connected and can only be cleaned w/ air and liquid. do it both ways. Let us know. You won't need to split the rack for that

Yep, sounds like your carbs....need to clean more than the bowls out. Check out the FAQ Suggestions and following Rickomatic's Old Skool Carb cleaing thread.

this is true, but following his tank story, particulates sound like the culprit - that pilot passage is Small and he only has trouble idling after the tank crap. no doubt full carb clean is great n all but it's kinda cool to know when something went wrong like this and put a theory to it and be correct. besides, might be a good way to get a glimpse of what's to come for when he really needs to get into them
