Swap engine out for a bigger engine

    I have oil leaks and was thinking about removing the engine and doing a rebuild (it has 38000 miles and it's all original afterall) and was toying with the idea of just dropping a new engine in. Then I thought, might as well go bigger while I'm at it! (Be aware of my sig (I have a 92)) My bike is a 600 and I was thinking of putting a 750. Would it fit? Does anyone have dimensions or know where I can find them or does anyone just know if it will fit? Would I be able to use the 600's carbs? Would it cause charging problems? Like, would I need a bigger battery/regulator??

    Umm... bigger problem.

    Your bike is chain drive; descendant of the original XJ400 then 500 then 550.

    All the "big" XJ's (650, 700, 750, 900, 1100) are shaft drive.

    You can't just "drop one in." The transmission is part of the lower end, remember?

    I'm not saying the conversion wouldn't be possible but it would require a lot of machine work and custom fabricating. Certainly not a "drop in."

    why not go forward in time?.......would an R6 engine fit in there? I mean there are both 600cc and chain drive soo?

    I already thought of that. There are differences in major angles, like the angle of the cylinders to the block and how the motor actually sits in the frame.

    LOOK at an R6 up close; it's actually quite amazing. The "lineage" is definitely there, but that is a completely different "lump" than its forebears. I was comparing one side-by-side with my 550 Seca last weekend talk about light years apart but still the same...

    Now THAT would be a conversion... stuff an R6 lump in a Seca 550... lots of fabrication, but if you started frame-off...

    Ok, now I gotta think about this again for a while.

    I had thought about a stripped-down HOTROD ! of a bike:
    A 550 Seca frame, lengthened a couple inches to accomodate a,
    FJ 1100 engine tightly packed into the frame.
    Clip-ons, rear-sets, smaller tank, short tail Cafe' look.

    too heavy. And if you keep the weight down, you don't need all those cc's.

    I think an R6 shoehorned into a Seca 550 would be plenty fast., plus you wouldn't sacrifice handling. The bikes already have that "short tail" thing going anyway even with the cowling. I'd want to keep it as close to stock looking as possible (with lower bars and rearsets though.)
