My buddy and I went to Camp Perry for our annual NRA champion shoot, we shot great had a fantastic ride and had Sat. night to ride and enjoy the Port Clinton area.
As we rode East on 163, a woman in front of us suddenly stopped, I hit my breaks and steared towards a gas station parking lot to avoid her, my buddy didn't have enough time to stop, he locked his breaks and slammed into the rear of my bike sending me into a drainage ditch. I hit the ditch on my front tire and went over the handle bars. My face hit the wind screen, and fortunatly the screen did what it was suppose to do, it broke away from its mounts. Unfortunatly I hit it hard enough to break my nose, fracture my eye socket, and fracture my cheek bone in a couple of places. Yes I was wearing my helmet. Always do. Sat. it had rained all day during our shoot, so the ground was soft enough to really ease my hit, but the damage had already been done.
My buddy dropped his bike and suffered only minor road rash, his faring took all the hit, and my bike barely has a scratch on it. It just wasn't my time yet.
So even in states that allow no helmets I strongly recomend that everyone wear one.
Thank the Lord I walked out of the hospital three hours later.

Damn. Glad you're more or less okay (and your buddy too)!

Just curious, were you wearing an open face helmet?

    hey biker...

did you shoot board week, games or what?

i shot the M16 match (so you know ive got no Legs), the Presidents with one bullet that went Spli-DOW enroute to the targets during rapids and then the Leg with 2 that went Spli-DOW during 300 rapids and then 2 more at 600...

i ended with 258-3 in the P100 good for 711th and then 430-6 for 841st...

i quit shooting the games matches in '06 after losing my mind sitting around all afternoon after shooting with NOTHING to do to pass the time until the next morning...

im glad youre in one piece. did you go to Mcgruder for treatment? i went there in 05 with a kidney stone...

do you shoot any of the MRPA matches or are you up north a ways? i used to shoot at Washtenaw a couple of years ago but its about a 2 hour drive down from where im at. my club holds the state matches and i picked up the win for my class in the state service rifle championship this year. too bad i cant transfer some of that shooting skill/luck to the nationals...

again, im glad you and your buddy are in one piece...

I was wearing a half helmet, if I was wearing a full face the shield would probably have broken and sent fragments into my eyes. But, I'm still going to start wearing a full face all the time.

the woman in the car actually stopped and covered me with a blanket, checked my buddy and was calling 911 before my buddy had a chance to.

we shoot the vintage rifle/springfield match and the John C Garand match. I shot like crap in the vintage event and shot a 240 in the Garand match.

Frankenbiker, Sorry to hear about you mishap. I am glad to hear you are okay and will be wearing full helmet from now on. I always do.

And hey, LtDave got to ya first, but I am a garand shooter also and have been to many John C. matches but never had a chance to go to Perry (yet). I'm a working stiff and getting that much time off to go that far is in the luxury category for me.

Take care and hope you heal up quick.

there are advantages to being 2-1/2 hours from Camp Perry...

85 minutes if i have no headwind. i can fly from KPHN to KPCW by going 190o for 90 naut miles. ive not done that yet though because i would have to rent the plane for a long stretch of 'time' even though im not putting the time on the engine/airframe. if i could get my brother in law to let get some training on his bonanza that would be a different story...

i actually left work when i went down this year and it was only a little over an hour or so...

Man... I wish we lived closer Lt. We could rent something (yeah a Bonanaza would be nice!) and share the costs AND the PIC time (make ya fly an approach on the way back lol).

During the flight we could discuss which is more fun... flying out there and back, or actually shooting in the match.

My buddy and I go down on thurs. shoot vintage/springfield fri. and Garand on Sat. usually we leave Sat. after the match but we decided to stay and enjoy the area, and go back on Sun. I would do it again in a heart beat, had so much fun that I'm not letting a little thing like a crash ruin it for me.
