Guy quick question on gauges. When I start the XJ the "stand, brake and battery light" stays on. I understand that my batterie needs a 'refill" but what does the other lights mean.. ? The bike is an 82 Xj750..

    THanks ..

IIRC stand would mean that it thinks the side stand is down and brake would mean it thinks the brake light is bad or that there is low brake fluid level in one of the masters.

At first blush, I'd be tempted to say you have a connector loose but it is difficult to say without any history on the bike. Have you done some work up in the headlight bucket recently? Of course it goes without saying that you may well have problems in all of the systems mentioned. Get the book out and dig in. Test each of the systems as outlined in the maintenance manual.

If the stand light stays on whiel you ride i can say you have a connector problem for sure becasue if everythnig was working correctly and the light was on the bike would cut off as soon as you shifted out of neutral.....its a safety feature.

Don't know how far you've dug into the bike, but I would definately say loose connection or faulty switch on the sidestand, on the brake light could be a faulty brakelight bulb or low on fluid, and on the battery, very likely that the battery sensor is missing or malfunctioning. A very good point as discussed earlier is that if you have done any work in the headlight bucket or up by the gauges there could be a loose connector.
