i am having an idle issue with my 86 xj700. after riding for a while when i come to a stop the idle is high, around 3000 rpms. i can hold brake and ease out on clutch to lower it and after 45 seconds to a minute the idle will stay low. it also stays revved while shifting gears. any suggestions or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

There are about 5 threads going about this. LOL I adjusted mine once it was at full high rpm idling. It was just over 2k and I adjusted back down to 1050. Had to wear gloves AND use pliers so as not to get burned, but it ended the problem for me COMPLETELY. Someone else on the forum told me how to do it but don't remember who to give credit to now.

    Steve,
Sounds like you have a vacuum leak. Check the intake boots by spraying WD 40 or starting fluid around them one at a time while the bike is running and listen for the engine to speed up or slow down. If it does then you will be able to narrow down which boot is leaking. It is an easy fix. It may be that the clamp is just loose. Tighten it up and watch your problem go away. If it is cracked boots, you can usually get away with just smearing silicone around to seal them up - many on this board will attest to its effectiveness.

Don't use the slipping clutch technique to get the rpms to drop or you will cause premature clutch failure. Keep us posted and we will help you get this straightened out.

Your carbs may also be out of synch. I recently had the same problem until I got the carbs synched which allowed me to properly set the proper idle speed with the bike warmed up. Prior to that, I was chasing the idle so some times it wouldn't stay running, others it would rev high like you describe.

It could be that your slides & or your butterflys are not shutting as quickly as they should, try pushing down, with a screwdriver on the throttle linkage at the carbs.
