I just bought an '85 XJ700 custom bobber that isn't currently running. I also bought another stock '85 XJ700 that was running fine one week ago. My plan was to take the working components and wiring harness off the working bike to make the nice bobber run. I have the bobber all wired up using the starter switch, sidestand relay, flasher relay, ignitor unit, starter relay, main fuse, diode, rectifier and ignitor units off the working bike. I'm not using the clutch switch (jumpered B/Y to L/Y), sidestand switch (jumpered L/Y to B), neutral switch or the oil level switch. I currently don't have the front brake switch, rear brake switch, or any other turn signals wired up yet, but I don't think that this should affect anything.

According to the wiring diagram in the Owner's Manual; everything should be working. At one point this week I had the motor starter revving, but the spark plugs were not getting any spar. As of today, I did something wrong and I can't get the motor starter to rev anymore. All I get is the motor starter relay clicking when I hit the starter switch.

I need help and advice. Thank you.

Make sure your battery fully charged. The clicking could mean you starter solenoid is bad. I had to replace the one on my seca after tapping on it with the handle end of a screwdriver finally stopped working. If it is bad you can jump the terminals on the solenoid to crank it over. There is a thread on how to test the starting circuit. http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=7828/ Here is a list of great How-To's that might help with other problems. http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=8588/

Alright, I only made it 2 steps in.........

STEP 1: The battery was measuring 11.9V, which should be sufficient for a 12V battery.

STEP 2: I used a screw driver to short across the two large terminals at the starter solenoid, and it was like the fourth of July. Sparks were flying at a mere contact, metal wanted to fuse together, it was not pretty. What does this mean?

I also performed a continuity test between the negative battery terminal and the engine case. It had almost no resistance, so that's fine.

I can't believe that the Motor Starter would be bad on this bike, and in the last week the Motor Starter also went bad on the bike that just ran.

    What do you think?
