Hi everyone. Just bought my first Yamaha, an 81 XJ650 Maxim on Monday night. Seems to be in good running condition (so far), just needs to be made a little more aesthetically pleasing. Prior owner left it outside and uncovered, so most of the chrome is showin rust :?
This seems like a great site for information, looking forward to picking everyone's brain once I start identifying all my problems

PBR, nice to have you here!
I love the quote, as well.
depending on the level of rust, you can clean it up pretty easy. do you have pics of the bike for us to enjoy?

well that didn't take long :D
I'll upload some pics tonight when I get home, thought its not looking to pretty right now. I shouldn't really say that. Its not bad, just not pristine.
I'll have a few questions by this weekend, having some problems already, but want to eliminate some possibilities before I bother you guys!

Safety thread was a great idea! Not enough safe riders out there. I'm riding in a mesh jacket with armor (and visible colors), and full face helmet, its those pesky cars I have to watch for...I drive in some congested areas, but I've found if I assume everyone around me is an idiot I stay safe.

I tend to stay away from the heavy traffic areas. no highways during rush hour, etc.
take a look at my album, my bike was probably worse than most when it came home. just time and patience will have it looking good in no time.

I think your bike looks great. I'll upload some pics tonight, I'd live input, recs, and will be searching the site thoroughly for ideas. My only limitations are my lack of mechanical skill and my lack of money, other than that I should be good to go! I got this bike specifically to learn what the heck I'm doing. I even got an extra set of carbs with the bike to tinker with before removing the real thing. Apparently a piece that is part of the original casted metal broke off so its unusable....Everything else should be great for potential spare parts, and fooling around.
