My neutral switch is not making contact on my 82 Seca 650. If I raise the shift lever with my toe I can get the light to come on and the bike to start, but it's right on the edge of shifting into second and kind of hard to do. I got a new switch, but after looking at it I don't think that's going to fix it. There just isn't much movement for the little plunger. I tried using the adjuster on the shifter but it was of no help. Can anyone tell me if the shifter can be rotated on the splined shaft where it goes into the transmission to get some adjustment or what I'm really concerned with, do I have something bent inside the transmission that contacts the little plunger?

    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mike

Brew, believe it or not all that separates a good one from a bad one is around 1/32" -1/16" of an inch. I had to replace mine last winter because of the small difference.

There is no adjustment...Change it....See below - old on the left....

While you are there, go ahead and replace the o-ring on the oil sending unit

I am also in the middle of this job, having taken the approach oulined in the manual, which is to remove the motor (well partially anyway). I can't figure out how else to get at it, as it is really tucked away behind that frame member. Please tell me how you went about it? Thanks. Scott J

    SecaRob,

Excellent posts and a big help. Not to often that you'll get an authoritative response so quick and with pictures to boot!

I'm with scottyj though. I took a quick look at it today and got the screw out pretty quickly, but I didn't see how I was going to get a socket in there right off. I didn't have much time to mess with it, but I'd appreciate any advice you've got.

Thanks again for the info you already posted,

Begin by removing the entire exhaust system.

Remove all of the bolts holding the motor in then it is as simple as prying the motor around until you can get a "very thin" 14mm deepwell socket onto the switch.

Here is the part that I want to stress. You will be doing alot of prying on the motor so have a buddy come help hold the bike from falling over while you do the work.

I wrote more about this back last winter. I'll see if I can find the thread and bump it

    Good luck

Thanks, I'll look for your other thread.

Edit: I found the other thread here. It definitely has some good info.
