The bottom shock mount for the left shock on my bike is a stud type of thing sticking out from the differential. Can this be removed? I looked at pictures of other guys who made their bike a hard tail, and everyone has a bolt going through on that bottom left side. I can't seen to get this "stud" out. Is my bike different in that it has a stud on that lower mount?

The stud does come out, it looks like it's a push fit, you would probably have to heat up the casing & use an extractor.

So there aren't any threads in the casing?

It is threaded into the casing on my 82 750 maxim. I had to have a custom one made for my HD shocks...It's hardened steel so you should be able to use vise grips to remove it. I got mine out that way.

I can assure you that there are threads there. When I removed the left shock on my xj650 the bottom stud came right out with the nut still attached. So .it's threaded at both ends.the same size at both ends if I recall correctly

    cheers, Murray

i might try heating it up and/or letting it soak with penetrating oil. I had had some vice grips locked on there GOOD and I couldn't get it without eventually losing the grip.

Murray, if you look at the fiche for that model it doesn't show a thread?
However if he uses some heat & turns it CCW he can't be wrong. Wiz.

fair enough, Wiz,but I can assure you that the left bottom mount of my 1980 xj650 unscrewed when I took it off, and it screwed right back in again when I put the rebuilt koni,s back on. The bottom nut holding the shock on never budged during the whole process.

    cheers, Murray
