    Hello everyone,

I bumped in to a 1985 Maxim X 750cc owned by a guy since 97 daily run, but just sat for last 2 years. According to owner it didnt even light up the neutral light. Hence he just gave up..didnt mess with any electrical(good for me i guess). I dont know where to start.

    1. The engine oil having sat for 2 years...should i top up with new oil and start draining without even starting as i assume some moisture would have built in with other debris.

    2. The clutch is really hard to pull -even at the engine case -throw out lever. Could this be again because of old oil sitting there.

    3. Dont even want to go to the carb topic yet...!!

Check the link below for pictures of her current STATE.

    Any suggestions appreciated.//////// Thanks

first, change the filters, oil and plugs
drain the gas out of the carbs and tank
it does sound like your clutch is sticking. if you cant get it to pull easily, change the oil and get it fired up. see if it will idle and try to pull the clutch free once it gets up in temp.

The clutch problem is most likely the cable. I'd say to pull the cable and see if it's stuck (it probably will be)... then you can see if you can free it up by running some oil through it. Regardless, if the cable doesn't move freely in its housing once disconnected, then you know the problems probably the cable and not the clutch itself.

I agree with both of the above posts

I'd start with simple stuff. I do it a bit differently.

    1. I'll replace the battery
    2. Verify I have spark
    3. Change the plugs
    4. Change the oil and filter
    5. Replace the final drive fluid
    6. Check all the fuses under the panel under the guages
    7. Clean the carbs
    8. Replace all fuel and vacuum lines
    9. Pull both front and rear wheels, clean out the dust from the rear drum, and clean and grease both axles.
    10. Rebuild those front calipers. I couldn't believe how bad both of mine were on both my x's
    11. Re bleed the brake lines.

I'd recommend an air compressor, as well as at a minimum, a gallon container of parts/carb cleaner.

I'd say that your clutch cable is seizing

Helmet, did I ever tell you I picked up an x for $300 2 years ago? And that all it needed was a tune and to have the correct wires run to the correct plugs to get it to run?? btw, that x you were going to come get is alive and well. Just finished her off. Other than tires, she is as good as she can get for now

also, that exhaust is WAY wrong, you might want to try to find a stock exhaust fot it. I didn't know that hindle made an exhaust for that thing. I dont' know if the bike has been rejetted or not, but she may not run real well with that on it.

maybe a dumb question but is the 85 750cc Yamaha Maxim the same as the Xj700N?

Not a dumb question chadall >>
In 85 & 86 Yamaha couldn't bring a 750 into the US due to tariff reasons so they made the XJ700N (aircooled) and XJ700XN (water-cooled)

It was originally a 750 but they adjusted the crank and rods to reduce the displacement slightly.

Canada (and the rest of the world I guess) got the 750cc version.

From my understanding, all the parts are interchangeable with the exception of the deep engine guts and I believe the carbs were jetted differently (but other experts can tell you for sure)
