Not really related to working on the bikes, but I went to gas up-the shadow today. I prepaid for my gas and when I was pumping it I figured it would cut off be itself(big mistake). Without looking I overfilled and gas went all over my gastank. The man I bought my bike from had just done a sweet paintjob on the tank too(dupli-color chrome yellow). So it p^ssed me off, and the first thing I did was come home, do a lite sanding on the tank and tried to wax it back smooth and shiny with some meguiers cleaner wax. It does look shiny but you can see where the gas poured across it if you look closely. Anybody else ever had this problem? Is their any good fix without having to repaint? I would'nt mind repainting it except I'm afraid it will come out not looking very good.

Dupli-color- - meaning rattle-can with no clear coat?
And then you sanded? I think you need to make a phone call, and get this guy's help. Or plan on a re-shoot yourself.

That's the draw back of rattlecans. If he used rattlecans you should be able to wet sand the tank w/800 just enough to take the shine off so the new paint has something to 'bite' into. Should be pretty easy to recover with the same color...you cahn dew eet!!!!(as Arnold would say! :D)

I've been in the paint and body business since '75 and I can tell you, even if he had shot a spray can clearcoat over the top it wouldn't have helped. Spray cans have NO hardner and without it the paint never really sets up and cures. You're going to have to repaint.

No it was not a rattle can. He did it with paint and an airbrush it looks very professional, but it could not stand the gasoline. Thanks for the quick replies. I am just going to let it ride for now. Riding season is coming to a close anyway and I was planning an a few mods during the winter, I guess I will just have to add this to the list of things to do.

I had the same problem.Got carried away filling up and the gas instantly ate through 3 coats of clear and made a gooey mess out of my paint.I still haven't fixed mine yet.I'm waiting til the season is over to get it repainted by a pro this time.
