OK well trying to remove a sheared off exhaust stud last night, i cracked the boss in three pieces and it unfortunately looks as though i now need to replace the head. Do the all knowing Gurus of this site have any suggestions on stuff i should look for when buying a new head. Also do we have any tips on removing and installing the new head. Thanks for all your help in my time of need :( :( :(

You can probably score a complete engine from EBAY. The cost of a cylinder head and gasket kit will be about the same as a engine.I have seen engines for as little as 100$.

id really rather buy a head and a gasket set just so i can have a completely rebuilt top end and ive been looking into shining it all up and painting it anyway. I just need tips on what to look out for so i dont wind up with a completely useless pile of scrap.

    Things you don't want:
    cracked or broken fins
excessive carbon build up, it can hide cracks
no broken or bent studs of course

Find one that has been cleaned and almost ready to install
    Things to check:
check all holes for broken or stripped threads
look at the valves real good, if possible hold the head upsidedown and put some water in the combustion chamber to see if any valves leak.

What do you mean, "please help!"? The poster above you told you exactly what to look for.

Why start a thread if you aren't going to pay attention to what people are saying?
