    Hey all.
I'm thinking very seriously of trading my '83 XJ750 for an '83 CX650 Honda. The Honda has a couple of problems. The seat is torn and the starter s broken. If you jump the realy it starts right up but the gas tank is a bit rusty too. However, I can tell from the look of the metal in and outside the tank it is fixable meaning it can be etched and painted, unlike our XJ tanks that start to rust and never stop until they are cheese food.
It is a solid bike with some promise. I've put a lot of work into my XJ though and I'm starting to see it as a bone of contention.
What do you guys think I should do?

Seem to recall reading that the CX500's were bad for going through alternators. Don't know if the 650's had the same problem or not. I would do a little research on that one if I were you before trading. Also remember that no matter what type of older bike you will spend time fixing and maintaining them on a regular basis. If you were wanting to trade I would try to work my way up to something newer.

Thought that was only a problem with the turbo model. But to be more precise, my bike is fine and this one needs fixing so I'm leaning towards not trading.

I'm with Helmet...I like the XJ. Plus you already know it's goods and bads. Do you want a smaller bike??

I might do it if it was a runner and a CX650 Turbo.
It sounds like it's neither... So it wouldn't happen.

Not too much work to be done for it to run. Did I mention that my cam chain tunnel gasket is leaking? I don't want to have to crack the head on this thing to change it. It's a minor leak, but I can't stand oil leaking anywhere. That being said, that is the only thing wrong with my bike.
Well, I like XJ's too, but they seem to have quite a bit more engineering flaws than the CX's do. Much more maintenance involved. I probably won't do the trade because my wife is not happy about it anyway.

Well, I took her for a joy ride last night (the Maxim) and I'm not giving it up. Put a new rear tire on it this weekend, a Shinko 712 and I'm loving it. I'm scrapping the almost new Dunlop on the front for a 712 replacement. I like this tire that much. Sticks to the road like glue.
So, I'll find another way to get that 650. I'm not giving up my XJ for it. Who cares if it blows a little bit of oil out the cam chain tunnel? I just wipe it off when I'm done riding!

Your XJ will be more reliable than a CX. They were pretty good when they came out, but they do not age as well as the Yamahas. The water pumps are a weak point (with age) and you need to pull the motor to get to them (same for the clutch). And they're not as powerful as the XJ. And the styling is......quirky......

As for your oil leak, clean up the area throughly (brake clean is good for this) and try a smear of RTV / silicon sealant on the join area.
