my bike seems to be running well since i cleaned out the carbs about a week ago. However it backfires here and there primarily in the lower gears and when i downshift. I was just wondering if this is normal or do i need to adjust something?

like popping through the exhaust as you are engine-braking or as you are just cruising?

    stock exhaust?

    Re: backfiring

Same question as the others: backfire (as in, flame coming back through one of the carburetors), or misfire (as in popping or flame out the exhaust)?

Backfire is usually a timing issue and is hard to have happen on these bikes because the timing doesn't really allow for something to cause it to be that far off. It could also be caused by significant carbon in the combustion chamber, though (igniting the incoming air/fuel mixture when the intake valve opens), or by a bad intake valve.

Misfire could be normal (under decel), an leak in the exhaust system, a bad valve (usually an exhaust valve), too rich (leaving extra fuel in the exhaust to be ignited later), or a non-firing cylinder (leaving extra fuel in the exhaust system to be ignited later).

    Re: backfiring

its popping out the exhaust when engine braking. It also died tonite. I did run seafoam in it on friday and put about 100 miles on it since then. today it started bogging out and eventually stalled and would not start. It started again about 10 minutes later and died again in about a mile. Im thinking the seafoam cleaned alot of crap on the inside of the tank and carbs and is sending it thru the jets and cloggin them. Any ideas? Also when it did finally start it ran perfect for about a minute.

the plugs looked ok but I am no expert. I will pull them out again 2moro and try to get pics up. also the top of the plugs seemed moist like water has gotten in past the boots.
