    1983 Seca Turbo

The bike runs fine up to about 6000 rpm, and then it just kind of bounces around up there. The turbo doesn't feel like it kicks in at all, or if it does, then I'm only getting power up to 6000 rpm (in which case there's a fuel supply/Carb problem). I don't know. Any advice? Should the turbo kick in at 6000 rpm in lower gears too, or is it just in 5th that it kicks in?

Im not at all familar with the turbo setup on the seca, but a turbo on just about any engine works off of the expansion of exhaust gasses. I say just about all engines, because the only other system i know of is the Squires Turbos systems that mount inplace of a muffler on late modle Cameros and such. They work on a differnet principal entirely.

So getting back to it. If your getting a lack of boost pressure, provided that all your intake ducting is leak free and your wastegate is functioning properly then you have a fuel issue. No fuel = no heat = no expansion of gasses = no boost.

Like i said before, im not at all familar with the turbo secas, so i assume it has a wastegate.

Finally, my only solid answer is to your last question. The turbo will work in all gears.

Fella the only way to check is to get a boost gauge , no guessing will help...

Well the bike itself does have a boost gauge. And, come to think of it, I didn't bother looking at it while I was riding so I'm not really sure. I'll go do that tomorrow and see what the gauge says though.

There are a handful of reasons for the lack of boost:

    - Wastegate stuck open
    - Damaged reeds in plenum
    - turbo is worn out and won't spin up
    - bad/stuck fuel pressure regulator

Boost gauges available From Mc MasterCarr .com Starting at (yup true;-) $10 and damned good ones too.
You will not do better, regardless of price paid.
Boost engages with load on motor With my saabs engine needs to be at 3,000 rpms and there must be a load on the engine.. goiung upgrade is the usual test method. When turbo hits the front (drive wheels) light up big time.. frightening as Hell when the roads are even damp. Dramatic inna Dry :) But them I;ve errrr modded the things to hold 20 psi (on the McMaster 2% accurate gauge) Only an.. Idiot.. would try similar power/boost onna bike not onna Dragstrip

i had the same problem it turned out that my wast gate was stuck open. if air is blowing past the wast gate while still on the center stand about 5000 rpm its probably the wast gate you can also pull off the air intake going in to the turbo itself it should be spinning at idle and charging up with the increase of your rpms if it doesnt move its either seized or has a lot of carbon build up
